A bottle can look perfectly clean and still carry germs in the places parents cannot easily see: inside the teat, beneath the screw ring and around the bottle neck. Knowing how to sterilise feeding bottles gives you a dependable routine for every feed, whether you are settling in at home with a newborn or preparing bottles around a busy family schedule.

For babies under 12 months, feeding equipment should be sterilised after it has been thoroughly washed. This applies to bottles, teats, rings, caps, breast pump parts and any other item that comes into contact with milk. The aim is simple: reduce harmful bacteria that can multiply quickly in milk residue and be difficult for a young baby’s immune system to handle.

Start with washing, not sterilising

Sterilising is not a substitute for cleaning. Any traces of milk, formula or grease can prevent a sterilising method from working as intended, so wash each item as soon as possible after a feed.

Take the bottle apart fully. Separate the bottle, teat, ring, cap and any valves or inserts, then wash them in hot soapy water using a clean bottle brush that is reserved for feeding equipment. Pay particular attention to the inside of teats and the thread of each bottle. Rinse everything well under clean running water.

A dishwasher can also be suitable for many bottles and feeding parts if the manufacturer confirms they are dishwasher-safe. Place small pieces securely in a basket or covered compartment so they do not move around or collect food debris. Even after a dishwasher cycle, check that every part is visibly clean before sterilising.

Wash your hands with soap and water before handling cleaned equipment. This small step matters, especially when you are assembling bottles after a night feed or preparing several feeds at once.

How to sterilise feeding bottles: choose a method that suits your routine

There is no single best method for every family. Steam, boiling, cold-water sterilising and UV sterilisation can all be effective when used correctly. The right choice often depends on your available space, how many bottles you use each day, whether you need to sterilise pump parts, and how much hands-on time you want the process to require.

Steam sterilising

Electric steam sterilisers are a convenient choice for regular bottle feeding. They use high-temperature steam to sterilise equipment in a closed chamber, usually within minutes. Arrange items according to the appliance instructions, with openings facing down where advised so steam can reach internal surfaces effectively.

Microwave steam sterilisers work on the same principle and can be useful in smaller kitchens or when travelling. They need the correct amount of water and a microwave-safe container designed for sterilising. Take care when opening either type of steam steriliser, as hot steam can cause burns.

Steam is often a practical option for parents who want a contained, repeatable routine. However, bottles must be assembled and loaded correctly, and the appliance itself needs regular cleaning to prevent limescale build-up. In hard-water areas, following the manufacturer’s descaling guidance helps it continue working efficiently.

Boiling in a pan

Boiling is accessible and does not require a dedicated appliance. Fill a large, clean pan with water, fully submerge the washed feeding equipment and bring the water to a rolling boil. Follow the item manufacturer’s instructions for how long it can be boiled, as frequent boiling may shorten the life of certain teats or plastic components.

Use clean tongs to remove the items and place them on a clean, covered surface to cool. Do not leave boiled teats or bottle parts unattended in the pan, and check for any signs of wear, cracking or stickiness before using them again.

The trade-off is that boiling can be more hands-on and may be less convenient when you have several bottles to prepare. It is still a reliable back-up method when used carefully.

Cold-water sterilising solution

Cold-water sterilising uses a sterilising solution or tablets in a clean container of water. Fully submerge all equipment, ensuring there are no trapped air bubbles inside bottles or teats. A small floating plate or grid can help keep items beneath the surface.

This method is useful when you do not have access to a microwave or mains power, and equipment can generally remain in the solution for the period stated on the product instructions. Always use the correct dilution and replace the solution as directed. The container should be cleaned between batches.

Some parents find the scent of a sterilising solution less appealing than steam or UV methods. If equipment is used directly from the solution, follow the product guidance precisely on whether rinsing is needed. Rinsing with unsterilised water can reintroduce germs.

UV bottle sterilisers

UV sterilisers use ultraviolet light to treat dry, cleaned feeding equipment. They can be especially convenient for parents who want a dry storage space for bottles, teats and selected pump parts, without handling hot water or chemical solution.

For UV sterilisation to work properly, every surface must be clean and positioned so the light can reach it. Check that your chosen unit is designed for baby feeding equipment, has sufficient capacity for your daily routine and gives clear instructions for compatible materials. Some models also include a drying function, which can make bottle preparation feel more organised in a compact kitchen.

A premium-quality UV steriliser can be a practical nursery essential, but it is not a reason to skip washing. Milk film, water droplets and tightly nested parts can compromise the result. Leave space between pieces where the manufacturer advises, and keep the interior of the unit clean.

Keep sterilised bottles sterile until the next feed

Once bottles have been sterilised, handling is just as important as the method you choose. Ideally, leave them inside the closed steriliser or covered container until you need them. If you remove them, use clean hands or sterilised tongs.

Assemble bottles while they are still sterile, putting the teat and cap on immediately. This protects the inside of the bottle from dust and contact with kitchen surfaces. If a sterilised bottle has been left uncovered for a long period, dropped, or touched inside, wash and sterilise it again.

It is helpful to create one clean bottle-preparation zone rather than placing parts beside chopping boards, washing-up sponges or everyday utensils. A tidy changing station and nursery may bring visual calm, but the feeding area deserves the same thoughtful approach: clear surfaces, easy-clean materials and a dedicated place for the essentials you reach for every day.

Safe formula preparation matters too

Sterilising bottles is only one part of safe feeding. If you use powdered infant formula, prepare it according to the instructions on the formula pack and current health guidance. Powdered formula is not sterile, so a clean, sterilised bottle cannot make up for incorrect preparation or storage.

Prepare feeds fresh whenever possible, cool them safely before feeding and discard any milk left in a bottle after a feed. Bacteria from your baby’s mouth can enter the remaining milk, making it unsuitable to keep for later. Ready-to-feed formula has different handling instructions, so check its label carefully.

For expressed breast milk, use clean, sterilised containers where appropriate and follow your healthcare professional’s advice on storage and warming. Avoid heating milk in a microwave, as it can create hot spots that may burn your baby’s mouth.

When can you stop sterilising bottles?

Many UK health professionals advise sterilising feeding equipment until your baby is at least 12 months old. If your baby was born prematurely, has a health condition or has a weakened immune system, ask your midwife, health visitor, GP or paediatric team whether you should continue for longer.

After the first year, careful washing and drying remain essential. Inspect bottles and teats regularly, replacing them if they become scratched, damaged, cloudy, cracked or difficult to clean. A bottle that no longer fits together securely is not worth keeping, however familiar it may be.

A well-planned feeding routine is not about making parenthood feel clinical. It is about removing one daily worry. Choose a sterilising method you can use consistently, keep your equipment in good condition, and give yourself the reassurance that every bottle is ready for the moments that matter most.
